I'm certain that I don't qualify for this, but can someone explain the rules for legal aid for custody and contact cases? I'm sure it will be useful to some.

Dear Actd,

Thank you for contacting the Children’s Legal Centre, an independent charity concerned with law and policy affecting children and young people.

Legal Aid is decided upon by a means test, and a merit test.

If anyone wants to know whether they qualify for legal aid, there is a calculator at http://www.communitylegaladvice.org.uk/ ... ulator.jsp , in to which they can place their financial information and it will determine their eligibility.

Alternatively they are able to contact Community Legal Services Direct on 0845 345 4345 and they will be means tested over the phone.

The merit test will be for the solicitor or Legal Services Commission to decide based on whether there is a reasonable chance of winning the case and whether it would be worth the time and money involved in this.

We hope this information is useful to you. Should you have any queries regarding issues of child law, please call the Child Law Advice Line on 0808 8020 008 and an advisor will be happy to help you.

Kind Regards

Children’s Legal Centre
