Hi all,

Firstly great forum you have here 🙂

Me and my partner are going through a bad patch and a split could be imminent :boohoo: we have a one year old son and partner has a 9 year old boy as well from a previous relationship.

I was just trying to ascertain whether i would lose my house if we split? I put a £40 k deposit down, i continue to pay the mortgage along with all bills..my partner contributes by buying the food shopping.

EDIT: I've lived here two years..my partner has only lived here around one year.

Would i be liable to lose the house if we split?

Many Thanks
Nebbo

Hi

It's one you are better asking the Citizens Advice Bureau or a divorce lawyer - I would say that you would retain some of the equity, but how much is up to the court. One word of advice though, if you use a solicitor, then consider whether it may be better to give away a little more than you would normally want to - if you fight to the last penny, you may find that you can lose more in legal fees than you have gained through fighting.

Hi many thanks for your reply. We are not married, would this make a difference? I will contact the Citizens advice. Thanks

It might put you in a stronger position, but I'm not sure, so the CAB would be best to advise initially.
