Hi there,

Sorry to hear you are struggling to see your son. Are you on the sick or are you out of work at the moment?

I think sometimes when we don't know what to do for the best and we can't see any way through our problems it's often easier to withdraw from the outside world, but that just makes us feel worse!

The good news is you don't need a solicitor to get access to your child, there are many dads here that do it and if you choose to go ahead you will get plenty of advice and support here.

Have a read through the stickys at the top of the Legal Eagle section, there are a couple about representing yourself and some YouTube videos about what to expect at the hearings, there's also one that helps with filling out the form you will need to apply for contact.

The first step is to try Mediation, legal aid is still available for mediation and you can check if you are eligible here

www.gov.uk/check-legal-aid

Here's a link to,the mediation service

www.nfm.org.uk

If the mother will agree to attend mediation and you can start talking she may agree to sign a parental responsibility agreement and once you have that you can apply to be put on the birth certificate. If she refuses to attend or mediation doesn't work then you can apply for PR and contact at the same time. Although there is a charge of £200 to submit the forms to court if you are on a low income or benefits you can apply for an exemption from the court costs.
