[Solved] Should child maintenance be used for private education?

Have been paying child maintenance for my 3 children for 8 years and my ex remarried. They are now sending the 3 to a private school. This is not a standard of living we would have been able to afford had we still been together. If they can afford this then do they still need my maintenance money? Do I have grounds to stop paying some or all?

Hi smith101,

Are you paying through the CSA - If so then I'm not 100% sure but I think your child maintenance commitments are not based on how much money your ex has access to. I would advise you to contact child maintenance options as they are the experts when it comes to advice of this nature . Here is the website or you can call them on 0800 988 0988 - they are a totally impartial source of info.

Yep, CSA payments are not related to how much your ex has, but purely on your salary and number of children, plus a few other factors.

If your ex has a new partner who is prepared to pay for private education for your children, then you are fortunate that your children are getting a good start - I can understand how you feel in that presumably, you may be struggling with the payments when she obviously doesn't need the money, but the CSA is about making sure you contribute towards supporting your children.

I agree with actd mate.

If you ex has found someone who can afford to pay for private education just be glad that your kids are getting such a great start.

I know you must feel a little pee'd because you could not afford this for your kids but at the end of the day your their dad and this new fella and his money can't replace you. Pay your bit towards them, be there for them and bask in the warm glow of the fact that they are getting a great education.
