Was doing a little bit of searching on the internet this morning and have just come across this.

http://www.stobartbarristers.co.uk/

I know that it is obviously cheaper to self represent but there may be times when you have to have legal representation and thought it might be useful for some.

Also consider the bar council which lists any barrister who is registered to act under the direct access scheme.

Direct access I think is a good scheme if you are unable to sustain the legal costs of solicitors.
For those who were not aware - previously you had to be referred via a solicitor to a barrister. You now do not need a solicitor to get a barrister and can deal with them direct.

There are advantages and disadvantages. Cost is potentially better in the long run. However be aware some barristers will increase their hourly rate if you are self repping. Solicitors tend to get lower fees I guess cause they refer lots of work. The cost you are comparing is the cost of a solicitor + barrister vs a barrister (with slighly higher fees in some cases).

There are other advantages of not having to wait for solicitors as you deal direct.

The disadvantages are that they cannot carry out any correspondence. Therefore you will still need to make sure court stuff is completed and correspondence and rubbish is dealt by you so this can be time consuming if you do not have legal expertise.

My feeling is that , I personally think solicitors are a waste if the other party is unwilling to cooperate.

They are they only winners.

If you are headed to court and need a barrister but cant afford a solicitor then I would think about this method. If however you are concerned about all the extra efforts and potential lack of legal expertise there are even alternatives...such as legal advisors who are not solicitors to help with the grey areas who cost a 10th of solicitor but much more friendly. Then again you always have this friendly forum....

I do hope you're not touting for business for other members Boycie! It would be a conflict of interest to come here as a member and then take money for giving advice and assistance behinds the scenes.

I have seen Stobart barristers on the Internet too, and wondered myself if they offer a good service.....there's no way of knowing the calibre of barrister you might be employing through them, so I would advise asking for a CV and testimonials.

Amended....no conflicts of interest to declare..... no names mentioned.....I dont believe it would be appropriate, so apologies if it came across plugging other services, clearly that is not my aim but to present an overview on direct access and potential other options.

🙂

is stobart in anyway related to the truck firm?

Ultimately yes do research....ask to speak to them.... a lot of them will not even speak to you and they merely say they want £X upfront so be careful you could spend a lot not knowing what you will be getting.

Stobart barristers is part of the Stobart Group - you only have to look at their page to see the colours confirm that! LOL! But it does also confirm they are part of the Stobart group, and based in Manchester.

Many Barristers are now directly approachable, I know my local Chambers is, they just had to do a course first and their home page confirms that they can be contacted direct by the public.

The Bar Council web page provides a list of all barristers in all areas of the UK and all areas of law 🙂
