Hi Steve,

Easy answer is you don't need to find one at all, you can do it yourself without the expense of the legal services.

There's a guide to representing yourself in court and applying for an order in the legal section.

I have spoken to a few solicitors who have said that there isn't much they can do that you can't do yourself, plus when you speak for yourself your emotions show which the judge can see.

If you have a complex situation then maybe a solicitor may be able to help, but as long as it's not complicated then there is no reason you can't go it alone, and I speak from experience, I have no legal background I simply wanted fair access to my son and after advice decided to go it alone, I now see my son every other weekend plus 2 weeks in the summer holidays and every other Christmas. My only expenses was applying for the court order. If you decide to go it alone to we can support you through it with advice.

However, to answer your original question if you still want a solicitor, then I'd say maybe try citizens advice to see if they can recommend or ask family/friends if they can recommend anyone.

I agree with Darren - have a good think whether you need a solicitor, or whether you can represent yourself.

If you decide you do need a solicitor, compile a list of questions and go and get a free consultation with a few and then decide which one you are happiest working with.
