Hi everyone,

I've just stumbled in having been searching for "new dads forums".

I am 37 and live just outside london in Berkhamsted. My wife of 5 years is now 18 weeks pregnant.

Strangely, I am not that nervous about being a dad, however after some earlier bad luck I am desperate for my wife for us to reach term safely.

So, having spent a huge amount of time studying courses relating to my profession, i've stopped those and have just purchased some new dad/baby books instead 😀

I thought by reading around (and hopefully contributing) to this forum i'll pick up some tips and hopefully gain some confidence. Especially as we recently moved to this town and I am rather isolated from a friends network!

So I wish everybody here the best in the meantime 🙂

Regards
Gavin

Hi Gavin

Welcome to the forum. It's been a long time since I became a dad, so I'm sure some of the other recent dads will help to reassure you. 🙂

Hehehe I know how you feel before Alex was born I was confused about almost everything - turns out I was being an idiot and almost all the stuff I worried about was fine!

The most important advice I can give you other than to not worry is that you can never have too many muslin cloths! 😀

Hi Gavin,

Welcome to the site mate. My little man is due in less than 6 weeks, so although I'm a bit younger than you, I know exactly how you feel.

Hope all goes well for you.

Haha, yes, it's coming back to me now. Same thing goes for babygrows - the nice pretty clothes that everyone buys will be fun for the first couple of weeks, and trips to the family - but reality will set in that you really need to change nappies frequently and easily. 😀

Oh I've just remembered that those ones that only open at the bottom are rubbish and very hard to remove in a hurry - we had one poosplosion while Alex was wearing one and the rest went straight in a charity bag 😀

Welcome,

I can offer that you join a wholesaler, something like Costco or Macro etc. as the nappies (although you do have to buy them in bulk) work out about half the price of place like Tesco or Sainsbury, we found Huggies to be better for our girls (better all round fit).

Good luck, enjoy and don’t 'over' research, take it as it comes.

You mentioned some earlier bad luck which suggests that this isnt the first time you have been expecting - if this is the case then I hope it all goes well this time.

You need to stay positive and the pair of you need to look forward to the great thing that is about to happen rather than what happened in the past

Stay in touch and you will learn about being a dad on this website so read up

I wish I'd done that at the beginning! We bought reusables, but they're an utter pain when you're out and about as you have to carry them home with you... and I worked out recently that at the rate we use them, we'd need to have two kids to get our money back 🙁

Still, it's better for the environment and at least we paid it all up front - but it's a [censored] shame they're so expensive. If we hadn't had a payment from health insurance when Alex was born we'd never have managed to pay for them. Hmm, I feel a YouGov petition for subsidised reusables coming on...

Just goes to show your milage may vary, we hated huggies!
