Weaning – what not to do!

Food glorious food!

At Dad.Info we know weaning is an important phase for establishing good eating habits that can last a lifetime. It is a pretty messy and dispiriting process though. Once your carefully home cooked organic puree or finger food has hit the deck for the hundredth time most parents are pulling their hair out. There are some basics to remember, always check with your health visitor or doctor before beginning weaning around six months. Remember the maxim, food under one is just for fun. Don’t rush, take your time, your little one can get most of their nutrition from their breast or formula milk up to one year. At this stage you are just getting them used to the idea of eating and introducing them to all the amazing foods you enjoy.

Ready to Start?

If your baby can sit up unaided, pick up food and put it in their mouth themselves and swallow it (not just spit it back) then you are ready to start your weaning adventure.

Check the NHS guide for month by month advice.

What not to do?

We don’t all get it right all the time (if you like to see the data check it here) and our friends, researchers at Queen’s University, Belfast are looking for families with children under 18 months to share their experience of weaning and they have some prizes if you take part. They want to provide tailored weaning advice to parents to improve parental feeding practices in the UK.
