Southern Man

My wife regularly amazes me. She’s a pretty fantastic kind of person. For the past 10 days we have been in America visiting her family. Every time I come here I am astounded that she came from a place like this. It’s a one stop-light kind of town, deep in the gun-slingin’, tobacco-chewing, truck-driving, good ol’ boy South of the USA.

 I neither sling a gun nor chew tobacco. I drive a Vauxhall Meriva, and though I consider myself a good guy, that is not enough to qualify as a ‘good ol’ boy’. It’s fair to say that I stick out like a sore thumb. Should I manage to engage a local in conversation (which is not hard to do) it’s only so long before I can see them zone out of what I’m saying to ask ‘Where are y’all from?’

Adlai has more claim to being a local than I do and he seems to have adopted the Southern way in a fashion I’ve as yet not been able to. He seems to blend in… in a good way. He’s not bought a gun yet and he doesn’t chew tobacco but he has (and always has had) an impressive admiration for trucks.
