Hello kennymac,
I think it was a reasonable question to ask and my personal thoughts are to tell her the truth about you having been to prison now. She is best placed to know if this will cause problems at work for her. It certainly isn't illegal to have a relationship between two people with the backgrounds you describe.
Do speak to her now before your feelings for one another deepen. She will either accept you or not but at least you will know where you stand.
