Spurgeons and Dad.Info doesn’t investigate reports of abuse or neglect. But below, you can find advice on who to contact if you have concerns about a child or young person.

Reporting a concern

It can be difficult to know what to do if you think a child is at risk. It’s important to remember that if you’ve spotted things that don’t seem right, others will have too. Speaking up can make sure that child gets help as soon as possible.

The sooner you contact your local children’s social care duty team, the quicker they can act. They’re available 24 hours a day, and can make an anonymous report if that feels safer. If a child is in immediate danger, please call the police straight away by dialling 999.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post, I really appreciate it.

My name’s Brendan and I'm studying for a degree in psychology with The Open University. If you are a new dad to a child under 1 year old, your help would be really appreciated, and I would value hearing your experiences.

I’m looking for new dads to take part in a study exploring the relationship between attitudes towards gender roles and emotional expression and symptoms of postnatal depression.

What would participation involve?

You will be asked to complete a survey consisting of 49 questions, and you will be given multiple responses to choose from and be asked to select the option that reflects your views. The first 40 questions are designed to measure attitudes towards gender roles and emotional expression, the final nine questions are commonly used to measure levels of postnatal depression. These questions are personal, and you may not be comfortable answering them. If you feel discussing the topic of depression or self-harm may cause you any distress you may wish not to participate in this survey. If you decide to take part, you will be asked to complete a consent form and the questions will then follow. This should take approximately 8 minutes, or 20 minutes if you are a father who has elected to take part in both studies.

Who can take part?

  • Fathers with children under 1 year old.
    • You must be able to read fluent English and have access to the internet via a device such as a computer, smartphone, laptop or tablet.

What next?

If at any point you need more information about the study, or you have any concerns, please contact the researcher by emailing zy473627@ou.ac.uk. You can also contact the project supervisor, James Munro, at james.munro@open.ac.uk. If wish to make a formal complaint, please contact the DE300 module chair at DE300-Chair@open.ac.uk.

Thank you for your time reading this information. If you know another new dad with a child under one year old that may be interested in participating, please share this survey with them.
