It’s been two centuries since the first rollercoaster in Paris started taking thrill-seekers on trips to nowhere, and every coaster developed since has become more stomach-droppingly exciting than the last.

1980

Alton Towers Resort, the UK’s largest theme park, opens.

2010

World’s fastest rollercoaster, Formula Rossa, opens in Abu Dhabi, reaching a top speed of 150mph.

2013

The Smiler, the world’s first 14-loop rollercoaster, is launched at Alton Towers, achieving a Guinness World Record.
